Abstract

Tinted sunscreen is a cosmetic product that functions to protect the skin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation while providing a more even skin tone. The increasing public demand for this product has raised concerns regarding the possible misuse of prohibited active pharmaceutical ingredients in cosmetic formulations, one of which is retinoic acid. Retinoic acid is classified as a prescription drug and is prohibited from being used in cosmetic products due to its potential to cause skin irritation, photosensitivity, and teratogenic effects. This study aimed to identify and determine the retinoic acid content in tinted sunscreen products marketed using Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) and UV-Visible Spectrophotometry, as well as to evaluate the validity of the analytical method employed. This study was a descriptive experimental study involving three tinted sunscreen samples selected by purposive sampling. Qualitative identification was carried out using the TLC method, while quantitative analysis was performed using UV-Visible Spectrophotometry at a maximum wavelength of 337 nm. The results showed that all samples tested positive for retinoic acid based on the similarity of their Rf values to the reference standard. The retinoic acid contents in samples A, B, and C were 0.05699%, 0.04330%, and 0.05715%, respectively. The analytical method fulfilled the validation requirements, including linearity, accuracy, precision, Limit of Detection (LOD), and Limit of Quantification (LOQ). It can be concluded that all analyzed tinted sunscreen samples contained retinoic acid and therefore did not comply with the regulations of the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority, which prohibit the use of retinoic acid in cosmetic products.
