Abstract

Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (CHLB) is an important effort to develop health awareness from an early age through the formation of habits related to personal hygiene, environmental cleanliness, and the implementation of healthy lifestyles. However, health education delivery for elementary school students still needs to be developed through innovative, interactive, and learner-oriented approaches that suit students’ characteristics. This community service activity aimed to strengthen CHLB education while improving students’ basic English skills through an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) approach based on health-related contexts. The activity was conducted at SD Negeri 101794, Patumbak District, Deli Serdang Regency, involving 30 students from grades V and VI. The implementation method applied a participatory and educational approach consisting of preparation, learning activities, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test instruments. The learning materials were developed by integrating English vocabulary, expressions, and communication practices related to personal hygiene, hand washing, healthy food, and a clean environment. The results showed an improvement in students’ understanding, with the average score increasing from 57.3 in the pre-test to 82.7 in the post-test, representing an increase of 25.4 points. This activity demonstrates that an ESP-based CHLB approach can create contextual, engaging, and meaningful learning experiences while supporting the improvement of health literacy and English communication skills among elementary school students.
