Abstract

Laundry wastewater is an environmental problem that can reduce water quality when discharged directly without prior treatment. This condition was identified at Mekar Jourdan Laundry and Adam Laundry in Kedai Durian Village, Deli Tua District, where wastewater generated from washing activities was discharged into public drainage channels without prior treatment. To address this problem, the Community Service (PkM) team conducted an activity entitled “Education and Training on the Utilization of Eggshells as an Adsorbent for Laundry Wastewater Treatment.” The activity was conducted in June 2026 in Kedai Durian Village, Deli Tua District, and involved 25 participants, consisting of laundry owners, managers, and workers. The activity included education on the environmental impacts of laundry wastewater, an introduction to the adsorption principle, demonstrations on the preparation of eggshell powder, and hands-on practice in using the adsorbent for laundry wastewater treatment. The results of the application showed that eggshell powder could be utilized as a simple adsorbent to help reduce Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) in laundry wastewater. A dose of 10 grams produced the most optimal reduction, with an average decrease of 86.8% in TDS and 50.91% in TSS. The practical activities also provided participants with direct experience in utilizing eggshell waste as an adsorbent and applying it to laundry wastewater treatment. Overall, this activity demonstrated that eggshell utilization can serve as a simple, economical, easy-to-apply, and environmentally friendly alternative for laundry wastewater treatment. The activity is expected to improve the knowledge, awareness, and practical skills of laundry business operators in managing wastewater and encourage the utilization of eggshell waste as a value-added material to support environmental conservation.
